The Equine Expert is on hiatus while we search for a new expert columnist who loves horses and has knowledge of the equine industry.

Check back soon for more details on questions such as:

  1. My daughter is 12 years old and loves horses. She has been begging for a horse for two years.  I have never owned a horse, nor do I know anyone who has.  My daughter showed me your column online to prove she has been doing research and is taking this seriously. My questions are: How much does a horse cost to buy and maintain. How much of the care could my 12-year-old daughter realistically do on her own?  (I’m a single mom and I don’t want this to be like when her absentee father bought “her” a puppy four years ago and I am the one who got stuck taking care of him.)  Thanks for your help.

  1. What is your favorite horse breed and why?

  1. Do you believe in those supplements that change / enhance a horse’s coat color?  I see ads in the magazines all the time, but I’m skeptical. I mean, people can dye or bleach their hair, but I’ve never heard of people’s hair color being affected by what they eat!  Also, what about the show circuit?  Are those hair chemicals banned substances?

  1. What discipline do you recommend for a new rider? I am just learning about all the different options and I am kind of overwhelmed.

  1. I'm not a horse person, but my sister leaves this magazine around all the time and I happened to see your column. Can you recommend some gifts for all the horse lovers in my life?  I don’t want something that will sit unused on a bedroom shelf. I want something that they will actually be able to use frequently, but that they wouldn’t necessarily buy for themselves.

  1. I remember you saying in a previous column that you used to (or still do) play polo.  Can you tell me some good colleges that are known for having prestigious polo teams?  I am going to start my college search with them.

  1. What is it with fly sheets?  I swear my horse, Kendall, rips one every time she is turned out.  It’s costing me a fortune. Any suggestions?

  1. Where can someone find used riding clothes in good condition?

  1. What’s your opinion on therapy products? Is there a preference in the industry for cold / hydro therapy, magnetic therapy, or liniments / poultices?  Please tell me some advantages and disadvantages of each that I should consider.

  1. What is the optimal time for having the farrier visit?  I have read everything from every month to every six months.  Now I’m just confused!

  1.  Let me say first off that I'm a horse owner.  I believe in doing everything natural as much as possible.  (Just to give you an example, I won’t feed my horses supplements; they get natural foods only, but I will have the  vet give them antibiotics when necessary.) So here’s something I’d like you to address in your column: Do horses really need blankets?  Horses have been running free since the dawn of history without blankets.  Now, every horse lover magazine or website I look has horses decked out in a different blanket for every season and every color scheme.  What gives?

  1. If you had to have one item only to make your life easier as a horse owner, what would it be?  (And where do I get it?)

  1. I keep hearing so much about Eastern Equine Encephalitis.  It is relatively rare in my area of the country.  Still, I am a hypochondriac on behalf of my horse, Montana Mudslide.  (I hope you like the picture I sent you.)  Anyway, what are the signs and symptoms of EEE and what do I do if I think MM is coming down with it?

  1. I am planning on moving my horse (and myself) halfway across the country.  What is the best way to find a vet in my new area who handles horses?
